The MediStar Legacy
The MediStar Awards, the region’s premier venue for recognizing the best-of-the-best in the business of healthcare, feature networking with more than 500 healthcare professionals and executives and a cocktail reception. Since 2007 the MediStar Awards have recognized excellence in the business of healthcare by honoring healthcare professionals for their achievements in advocacy, innovation, education, leadership, design, aging, as well as announcing the Physician and Nurse of the Year.
The MediStar Awards were originally created by Sandy Wensley, the former owner of Medical News in 2007. Wensley said, “the creation of the premiere recognition event for healthcare in our region – The MediStar Gala – allowed us to showcase the stars of our community. It was both gratifying and exciting, with each year’s event being more successful than the last.” Selected by a non-partisan group of judges, winners have contributed their wisdom, knowledge, talents and hearts to the provision of excellence in healthcare.
In years past, Wensley created themed ceremonies in order to celebrate local healthcare leaders. For example, the first MediStar Awards was held at the Palace Theatre, with Heather French Henry serving as emcee. Guests enjoyed listening to the "Doctors of Swing," a 16-member physician band performing swing music of the 40's, 50's and 60's. MediStar ice sculptures were donated and sculpted by culinary program students in the Garde Manger class under the direction of Chef Robert Beighey of Sullivan University System.
